New Student Orientation
(Getting Started in Humanist Education)

It's easy to become a COHE student! Just register (no tuition, no obligation) and then log in when our system prompts you. Each time you log in, you're eligible to enroll in new classes or attend those already on your schedule. But if you'd like to look around first, here are some ideas.

Step 1: Explore

  • Check out our free demo course, Introduction to Humanism: A Primer on the History, Philosophy, and Goals of Humanism. The modules of this course go beyond providing a foundation for your future studies; they also serve as a short tutorial on using the COHE site. You don't even have to register first.

  • Read the Study Area Overviews below. Like our demo course, overviews are free modules, open to registered and non-registered users alike. They highlight concepts and ideas you'll be exploring in much greater depth when you enroll in a Study Area's available courses.

Area I: Humanist Activism and Organization (HAO) Overview

Area II: Science and Humanism (SCH) Overview

Area III: Psychology and Humanism (PSH) Overview

Area IV: Law and Politics (LAP) Overview

Area V: Religion and Spirituality (RSP) Overview

    Area VI: Ethics (ETH) Overview

Area No corresponding Roman number!: Humanist Studies (HUM) Overview

  • Read about COHE. Familiarize yourself with our world-renowned faculty and peruse our FAQs, or Frequently Asked Questions. Visit the catalog for a broad view of our academic curricula. Enjoy a leisurely browse through our bookstore and our glossary.

Step 2: Register

Our free, automated, one-time-only registration process guides you through every step. You'll enter your data, create your own personal, password-protected login account, and confirm your registration with a link we e-mail to you. In a matter of minutes you'll be logging in as a COHE student for the first time, ready to enroll in your first courses. You'll use this same login every time you return to COHE.

Step 3: Enroll

So many modules ... so many provocative, engaging topics! Where to begin?

First, be sure you are registered and logged in. Only registered, logged-in COHE students can see the course enrollments available to them.

Most students will choose a Study Area's free Cornerstone Course Introductory module as a starting point, but where to begin your online humanist education is up to you. Check as many boxes as you like in your enrollment table, and our system takes it from there. There are no prerequisites for any module.

Payment of tuition for modules above the Introductory level will be handled online via our secure credit card interface. (See our FAQs page for details about postal mail payments.)

How to see your table of courses available for enrollment: Your first login, and every one thereafter, will land you on your own personalized student union page. The enrollment link from that page or the main menu will bring you to a list of available modules, customized to your personal COHE enrollment history. You'll also be offered course enrollment whenever you complete a module, in case you wish to move on to the next level.

Remember: you must be registered and logged in to see your personal enrollment options.

Step 4: Go to class, and more

Each time you log in for a new COHE session, from your first time on, you'll be transported to your own personalized student union page. From here you can add classes to your schedule, change your personal settings, edit your registration data, and more. Remember: logging in is key to your customized COHE session. The general public can access many features of our site, including the COHE-wide glossary, the Study Area overviews, and our demo course. But only registered, enrolled students can attend COHE course modules at or above Introductory level.
